this is an early painting of mine...ishmael. the white whale lies between his heart and his passion, in this case the booze bottle. ishmael is important to me because he is the observer. while ahab experiences the events of moby dick, ishmael transforms the events into the story. people like this often disappear under their own creations. ahab becomes larger than life, ishmael's role is diminished in comparision. ishmael is...jack kerouac, harry smith, alan lomax, and countless others whose minds change life(heart) to story(booze bottle).
